Itinerary

Day 1. Seville to Palma Del Rio

Ride Day - 55km/34m – Dinner inc.
We meet in this historic city of Seville at our designated hotel at 09:30am to transfer out of Seville´s hustle and bustle to what was the fertile breadbasket of the Roman Empire. With time to explore fascinating Carmona known to the Phoenicians and which has a 1st century Roman necropolis, we set up the bikes and embark on a cycle through pleasant countryside plains and orange blossoms. Winding back slowly with time to arrive at Palma del Rio, which boasts a Moorish defensive wall, Palace used in modern day movies and stately Parisian made Iron bridge.

Stay the night in an unique and beautifully converted 15th century monastery of outstanding charm where Columbus was rumoured to have spent time. The Monastery is proud to be also associated with the founding of the Californian missions of Santa Barbara, San Diego, San Francisco and San Juan Capistrano, all set up by past resident, Friar Junipero Serra. Sample a local fino sherry before enjoying the best of Andalusian cuisine in its atmospheric and timbered dining room for our welcome dinner. Interested in this town and hotel? Read about it on our Cycling Country Blog.

For more time to explore Seville´s monumental heritage, we suggest you arrive before hand and visit the magnificent Royal Alcazar or even the nearby Roman city of Italica. We can also organise a walking tour with our local guide Alfonso to learn about this great city, visiting the Gothic Cathedral, the largest in the world, before exploring hidden neighbourhoods and secret treasures of the Santa Cruz centre. Extra night(s) in our designated meet hotel can be arranged - please ask.

Day 2. Palma Del Rio to Córdoba

Cordoba bike tour Ride Day - 40km/25m (optional 25km extra) – Breakfast
Ride out into the Campiña Cordobesa, the fertile region known since Roman times, which produces everything from oranges, peppers, artichokes and olives. Cycle to a village with an impressive castle perched dramatically on its hillside. Onwards to the heritage city of Córdoba, once medieval Europe´s most illustrious having more street lights than Paris, and arrive at our hotel located next to the historic centre and a short walk over the beautiful Puente Romano - Roman bridge.
Andalucía´s White Washed Villages We will take a guided walking tour of the old city quarter, the Judaria, and enter one of the most incredible buildings in Europe, the UNESCO heritage Mezquita (mosque-cathedral) with its bountiful arches. You really will be staggered by it! Soak in the atmosphere of the monumental centre which was home to such illuminaries as Roman statesperson Seneca, Abbas Ibn Firnas, father of aeronautics, and Jewish philosopher Maimonides (who wrote the wonderfully named, "The Guide for the Perplexed" which you can buy on Amazon today!). We also visit a medieval synagogue, only 1 of 3 remaining in Spain from this era, from when this city was a peaceful cultural, spiritual and intellectual melting pot.

Enjoy the last vestiges of sunset on the beautiful Roman stone bridge with the city backdrop from outside your 4 star hotel. Discover for yourself Cordoba's traditional patio courtyard with Moorish inspired cuisine in its many excellent restaurants.

Day 3. Córdoba to White Village of Zuheros

Ride Day – 64km / 40m (optional 14km extra) - Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner inc.
Cycling in Andalucia in SeptemberThis area is known as the Ruta del Aceite (Oil Route) for good reason, as Spain is the biggest olive oil producer in the world ( about 45% of the world´s oil) taking in a harvest from 300 million trees. Andalucia makes up the majority of this and you will see why as row upon row of olive trees punctuate the landscape! An amazing crop, the leaves flutter in a silver shimmer when the heat rises and the liquid gold is resplendent on every single dining table. You cycle through open expanses of wheat, cotton and sunflower fields, spotting the wild hawks high above. Stop for a picnic lunch in a town famous for its olive wood furniture before passing through the heart of olive oil production, Baena, with its remains of Moorish fortifications and white washed homes in the Barrio Arabe on the hillside. We head to Zuheros, one of the prettiest White villages in Andalusia, the Moorish castle literally hanging from the rocks and its tiny cobbled streets keeping a still very traditional way of life.
Andalucía´s White Washed Villages Antequera´s Tourist Board FilmEnjoy exploring your own beautiful 4 star Hacienda for the next 2 nights. A special place, it is a lovingly restored 19th century olive press and has its own study, library, hot baths and relaxing poolside. Take in the views from the terrace before a delicious group meal of local specialities. Afterwards look out at the star constellations and know that, poetically, the rock caves above, harboured neolithic families, which you can imagine, also peering out into the same starlit inkiness too.

WildFlowers in AndaluciaN.B. It is possible to join the tour this morning in Córdoba (6 days / 5 nights) or even start the day before by joining for dinner. Fast Direct Train Connections from Madrid Atocha Station (on the metro underground route from the airport) or from Malaga make it easy!

Day 4. Zuheros and the Olive Cycleway

Loop Ride or Rest Day - from 25km / 15m upto 50km / 32m – Breakfast inc.
Bike Tour of Andalucia with road bikes Start the day off by becoming a connoisseur of great oils on our private guided tour of a distinguished Organic olive oil press, family run since the 18th century. It still uses the original equipment and the oil is superb. Enjoy an optional rest day (walking options available) or take a guided loop ride, exploring the olive area and surrounding villages of the Subbética. Have time in the afternoon to ride the relaxing 'rails to trail' traffic free path to a lagoon passing the old olive oil railway stations, now converted cafes or even something more strenuous, a superb climb upwards into the park. Experience views of olive groves for as far as the eye can see. For dinner, stay at the hacienda or venture into the nearby and tranquil white village with its castle.

Day 5. Zuheros to Ancient Antequera

Ride Day - 60km / 37m – Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner inc.
Bike Tour in Andalucia in October Cycle through a national park with its lonely medieval towers, stopping en route to explore the truly baroque town of Priego. Admire the fine churches and fountains before walking through the square to a 13th century Arabic fortress. Head through rolling countryside of olive trees and white washed farmhouses, stopping en route for a picnic, to arrive in the Lake District area of the Malaga Province. Bike Tour in Andalucia in OctoberOverlooking an impressive lake surrounded by mountains and small white cortijo farmhouses, pause for a cold drink or coffee whilst we load up the bikes and transfer to our highlight hotel near Antequera. This majestic 16th century convent, now a 5 star hotel, is a romantic stay with its frescos and domed ceilings. Enjoy our group dinner with tasty local wines in the lovely dining room watching the disappearing sunset and the tiny bats flit around the indigo skies.

Day 6. Antequera and the El Chorro Gorge

Loop Ride or Rest Day - from 40km / 25m upto 70km / 44m – Breakfast inc.
Cycling in Andalucia in May Start the morning with a joyful ride through Abdalajis valley´s rolling hillsides, pastures of sheep and goats, and be awed at the deep cut El Chorro gorge. Here you can admire the Caminito del Rey (King's Walkway), a series of wooden walking platforms that somehow hang to the gorge side. Today´s optional ride revels in stunning scenery and pays testament to the richness of this area´s millenniums of culture from Roman centurians to Romantic era Bandolero bandits. Cycle past the pristine waters of the local reservoirs before looping back to your luxury convent. For those who are keen for more miles, try the El Torcal climb, a national park with millions of years of history.

Bike Tour of Andalucia with road bikesWhy not relax in the hotel´s spa or venture into the bustling town of Antequera (which the Romans called, "Antikaria") with its Neolithic sites, enchanting Moorish Alcazar and Renaissance plazas to enjoy a bite to eat. Or even, have a day visiting and walking the windswept Karst rock sculptures in the El Torcal reserve or even the nearby Wolf Park!

Day 7. Antequera to Grandoise Granada

Ride Day 50km / 30m – Breakfast, Lunch inc.
Cyling in Andalucia in April The spectacular scenery continues as you head out of your convent hideaway and along roads with sweeping views of the surrounding countryside Sierras. An impressive day of cycling awaits as you ride past the coastal mountains, taking in a high plateau where vine tomatoes tower in the fields. Stop to admire an incredible view out to the sparkling Mediterranean Sea below. Bike Tour of Andalucia with road bikesWe finish with a cold cerveza beer and tapas lunch to toast the end of this epic cycle ride in our rural home town of Alhama de Granada, with its enchanting medieval churches, arabic barrio and pretty gorge. Its literary references are many, so lovely and historic is this place. Washington Irving of "Ichabod Crane, Sleepy Hollow" fame passed through, Cervantes mentioned a famous Alhameño in his writings and Lord Byron wrote an epic poem about the town´s Arabic defeat in the Reconquest.

After lunch, take an afternoon transfer to the picture postcard city of Granada with the back drop of the snowy Sierra Nevada. Relax in the centrally located 4 star hotel, full of Andalusian charm and an easy stroll from the tranquil Genil River and the soaring cathedral with its Royal Chapel where the matron of Spain lies, Queen Isabella and her King Ferdinand.

Day 8. Granada and the Alhambra Palace

Explore Day - Breakfast inc.
Bike Tour of Andalucia with road bikes The best bike tour Andalucia, Spain What is a voyage to Spain without a visit to the most iconic, unique and alluring building in Europe, the Alhambra Palace. Exploring in a guided tour, this UNESCO Heritage site of the 13th and 14th century fairytale Nasrid Palace and the Generalife Gardens, is a must. Be amazed by the centuries old wonderland of elaborate stucco, tile work and peaceful gardens. This is the palace where Catherine of Aragon (King Henry 8th´s first wife) grew up, and writer Washington Irving lived and sought inspiration!

Bike Tour in Andalucia in OctoberThe rest of the day is free to wander the timeless alleyways, enchanting Albaycin quarter and hidden plazas on your own and pick up any souvenirs and of course, more tapas!

Lodgings

“You know you're in love when you can't fall asleep because reality is finally better than your dreams.” Dr. Seuss

Your holiday slumber is the most important thing, even if you are in the southern province of late night owls. The Andalucíans love the night and once the sun sets, there is the favourite activity of the "paseo", leisurely strolling in the evening's cool and catching up on gossip.

However, we want you to enjoy your holiday and without some solid ZZZZZZs, you will be doing the other famous cultural activity here, the siesta snooooze. Our Enchanted Andalucía tour is no exception and we have chosen our accommodation based upon its character and without doubt, your comfort.

A highlight hotel to absorb the history that this route is set in is the stunning Magdalena Convent, a 16th century, 5 star hotel covered with captivating frescos and medieval charm. Enjoy the spa facilities and the peaceful mountain setting. Our food is prepared by chef David Muñoz, who worked at Spain's famous El Bulli restaurant. A fine meal surely awaits.

We stay in Palma del Rio´s elegant 15th century San Francisco Monastery that Christopher Columbus rested in before setting off to the new world. A hotel full of history, legends and charm. More in our Cycling Country Blog.

The beautiful, family run 4 star Hacienda Minerva we stay at is full of regional style and some awesome views. It allows you to really get a chance to enjoy the smaller villages and experience their daily life. Set high in the olive groves, this Hacienda has its own hamman style baths and a library to relax in.

Lodgings in Granada and Cordoba are 4 star and are ideally located to explore these great dames. You are never far from the sights and restaurants of these living museums and you can always come home to comfort.

In some places we visit, there are only a few choices, but we never compromise on our philosophy of providing charming accommodation. Wherever we stay, you will for sure enjoy the hospitality provided.

“ Guided Enchanted Andalucia - Nov 2015"
Good Day, Maggi, Dean and Javi, Thank you for a most enjoyable and memorable vacation! Maggi, we thank you for all the behind-the-scenes preparation. Dean and Javi, you were always so patient and kind, to put up with us novices, and out-of-shape cyclists! Also, we appreciated your constant enthusiasm, and imparting knowledge of all of Spain! We cannot wait to return, and I am working with Michael to adjust his time off so we can go to Portugal with you! We adore the photos, thank you so very much! I had no idea you all were such shutterbugs! (engaged in trying to climb the hill, no doubt!) Thank you so very, very much again and again!

R. Bueche, IL, USA

“Thanks! - Guided Custom Enchanted Andalucia - Oct 2015”
Hi Maggi and Jeff, We absolutely loved our cycling trip! The small group was ideal - Dean and Warren couldn't have been better guides - and the hotels were wonderful! Thanks for helping us plan and take part in a fantastic cycling vacation in Andalucia!

J & D. Comeau, ME, USA

"Guided Enchanted Andalucia - Nov 2015"
"I just wanted to give you some feedback on our recent trip.  We had a blast!  The trip was incredible.  I don’t think anyone had any complaints.  Dean and Javi were wonderful.  They were both very considerate about everyone’s comfort and happiness.  I can’t say enough good things about them. One more thing, the electric bikes were great.  I’m pretty good at most parts of biking but those hills… Anyhow, the electric bike took away any stress and allowed me to sightsee as we biked.  I did feel just a bit guilty cruising by people on the hills, though.
Thanks again.

Marie and Jerry, IL, USA

“Magnificent Andalucia bike tour”
Let's start with our two amazing guides, David and John, who facilitated the trip through Andalucia of our group of 10 cyclists anyway they could with a lot of flexibility and reactivity. They were also major contributors to a fantastic group dynamic that was a great part of the experience (we were fortunate to meet great people as co-riders during this trip). The tours and guides booked by Cycling Country for the cultural visits were top notch. The company owners do not appear to be counting every penny and provide generous extras (cereal bars for the bike rides, good and abundant wine for the included meals, etc). They even went the extra mile to provide gluten-free snacks and bread at meals for my wife.
Cycling Country has the feel of a family business with the service and the professionalism of a very experienced enterprise. To top it all, their pricing is very competitive.

J.Michel, Edmonton, Canada

"I can't begin to tell you how much I enjoyed the bike trip with you. Thanks for all your encouragement, inspiration in many ways, and creating a totally relaxing atmosphere. It was an exceptional experience."

I. Dugge, Maryland, USA

"As an inexperienced cyclist on my first supported bike tour, I wasn't sure what to expect but I was very pleasantly surprised. The organization of the tour was excellent with very good accommodation, a well thought out route and a good mix of cycling, sight-seeing and cultural experience. This company have really done their research to provide a very good experience of Southern Spain at a very reasonable price."

I. Taylor – Vancouver, Canada

"I am now inspired to forget the breakfast mess still in the kitchen and go for a bike ride this sunny afternoon."

Helen Watler – Vancouver Island, Canada

"Thank you for the profile of the climb above Zuheros. Great memories!! I see the little spot where I stopped to recover, sucking air like crazy, legs shaking, and reaching for some food and water. I'll never forget how you and Dean kept encouraging me. (Did I say thanks??)"

L. Hayek, Nebraska, USA

"Thank you so much for making our Cycling holiday so happy and enjoyable. We wish you all the best and are sure that your company will go from strength to strength with all the hard work that you put in.”

Claire and Madeleine, UK

"The price seemed too low for a hosted tour, so we--very skeptically--corresponded personally with Maggie to see if we could find the catch; didn't find one, so we booked. This turned into the best vacation we've ever had, at any price. They treated us as royalty, immediately corrected problems (which were few), threw in jerseys, bikes that made us happy, inns that were simply marvelous, food to die for, and, tours of historical interest at every turn. This is not all: the terrain was pleasurably challenging, the natives wonderful, and the September weather great. We're now trying to get our biking friends to do a custom trip, their specialty. They were more than tour guides, they were friends. We left for home completely satisfied, but sad it was so short. Don't miss this one!"

J.H, California, USA

"Thank you so much for our tour! We enjoyed it immensely and found the service and organisation to be of an exceptional level. The bikes were in excellent condition and we also thought that your choices in accommodation were spot on. We would recommend Cycling Country without hesitation to anybody who has a sense of adventure and a love of cycling!"

Damon Hunt, London, UK

"It was a fabulous experience; we both loved it! Maggi & Geoff are just delightful, both complement eachother very well. Extremely helpful and sensitive to client wishes....they have an in-depth knowledge of the region and provided wonderful insight, sight-seeing, cuisine etc through quaint towns and villages."

Annie Lurie and Andrew Crawford, Melbourne, Australia

"I can really recommend the Andalucia tour. I would happily give a reference."

Paul and Barbara Martin, Chicago, USA

"The trip was very well organised. Nothing was too much trouble for our leaders, Geoff (owner), Dean and Penny. There was always someone cycling to guide the route, with the van as backup for spare clothing, snacks or for a ride. We could each cycle at our own pace. The accomodation was well chosen, interesting and varied. Great choice of restaurants with menus chosen to enable us to sample the local cuisine. Our sight seeing tour leader for Sevilla was excellent. This was our first guided cycling tour and we thoroughly recommend Cycling Country."

J.A, Australia

"Having returned to our go go go life, I often reflect back on the mile after mile of rolling Spanish countryside and find a moment of peace and calm. For anyone interested in a trip to Spain, there is no better way to get to know the land and its people than by bicycling across its territory. You will not be a passive tourist but will emerse yourself as an active participant in a vibrant and colorful landscape. My wife and I were most impressed by the facility and professionalism with which Maggi and Geoff were able to guide 10 cyclists of varying ablilities across 200 miles of Spanish countryside. Their knowledge of the route is intimate. Moorish Andalusia is, afterall, their home. Hats off to you both Maggi and Geoff, we look forward to our next adventure together!"

Hemant Vankawala M.D., Texas, USA

"I'm having a great time telling everyone about the trip. Basically I'm in raving mode! So thank you both for a great time. The holiday could hardly have been better. It certainly met every expectation and I really feel like I had a great tour of Andalucia."

Dave O'Connor, Dublin, Ireland

"Can't possibly overstate what a wonderful experience it was to ride with the Spanish based company 'Cycling Country' on their Andalucia tour.Guides were knowledeable both about biking and the countryside/history of the region. The small group size (16 max) as well as the encouragement and humour of the guides resulted in a sense of family in the group such that many of us, strangers when we began, are already hoping to do another trip next year. Every detail was so carefully planned that they would always be my 'go to' company for cycle touring in Europe."

J. Ellens, Ottawa, Canada

" Dear Dean and Geoff, Thanks very much for a great week with you, which I really enjoyed. You were professional, well organized and extremely pleasant. If you want to put this up on your website you are welcome to do so, and I would encourage anyone who reads this to do a cycling tour with you. That includes not particularly fit 56 year olds like me!"

Terence Matzdorff, Cape Town, South Africa

Maggi and Jeff, Thanks so much for a wonderful experience in Spain. If you ever need a testimonial for your website, just ask! I've got only positive things to say about Cycling Country. Will be off to the bike shop this week to ask about a road bike!!"

Claire B, London, UK

"Maggi & Geoff: Thank you for a wonderful ten days of adventure, encouragement, and expert guidance. The Andalusian tour exceeded all our expectations! Best of luck in all your endeavors!"

Nicole, Kathy, Annie, David, Frank, Karla, USA

"Dear Maggi and Geoff, Thanks for posting the photos. I had a great holiday. You don't really notice when somethings are well organised but looking back everything went so well, hotels, food company and of course some easy and more challenging cycling on a comfortable bike"

Paul Randall, Yorkshire, UK

"I am now inspired to forget the breakfast mess still in the kitchen and go for a bike ride this sunny afternoon"

Helen Watler, Vancouver Island, Canada

Just a quick e-mail to thank you so much for such a good week's cycling. I had an amazing time....it just didn't last long enough! It was a really nice taster of the real Andalucia - The touring was amazing and the hotels and food just set it off perfectly. I would be happy to recommend the trip to anyone who is unsure"
