Granada and the Sierra Nevada
GUIDED ROAD CYCLING
NEW SPORTS TOUR ROUTES!
Based in the centre of the beautiful city of Granada at the foot of the Sierra Nevada mountains, this tour takes you on 4 varied, scenic and challenging loop rides on roads carefully chosen by us using our local knowledge. Rides are in the morning and get back early afternoon giving you plenty of time to relax, recover and explore the wonderful city. Being a short tour of 5 days in total, it should appeal to those of you who are looking to get some quality riding in on challenging roads over an extended weekend. An ideal fixed based training camp.
The loops take us out of Granada (easy to cycle in and out of with our local knowledge) onto the silky smooth asphalt roads, passing olive and orange groves and white villages galore. As a final test on the last day of riding, you ascend the infamous "Pico Veleta" of the Sierra Nevada, Europe´s highest road. Plus you have the chance to ride other famous local climbs used in previous La Vuelta's and the roads where the pros train (Movistar, Garmin, Lotto and Peter Sagan with his Bora Hansgrohe team).

70km - 400 metres of climbing
Transfer from Malaga and Granada airports on the Friday morning or meet in Granada at our hotel at 15:00. After a bike set/build (depending on whether or not you´ve brought your own bike with you or hired one of our carbon Treks), we head out on a warm-up ride to get you feeling comfortable and acclimatized.
140kms - 1,560 metres of climbing
Depart after a hearty breakfast and head out of Granada past the fertile plains (vega) along gentle roads for the first 25kms eagerly anticipating the day's first climb. Spectacular and ever changing scenery will surprise you as you crest every climb. The names of pro riders like Valverde and Contador can still be seen painted on the road from a recent "La Vuelta a España" as we ascend up towards the white villages of the area before heading back to Granada.
130kms - 1,350 metres of climbing
We head out in a different direction into wonderful cycling countryside favoured by local Granada cyclists. A slightly easier day than yesterday, but still a good and challenging workout. A loop that takes us past olive and almond groves, via a beautiful blue lake, a shady descent and a climb through pine trees to arrive at Granada cyclists' favourite cafe. Once again you can see the pro riders names painted on the road from the Ruta del Sol (Vuelta a Andalucia) race. These are the quiet roads regularly ridden by us and locals out training.
90kms - 2,100 metres of climbing
The final challenge of this tour. Your chance to ride up "Europe's highest road bike climb!" A climb of 30kms upto 2,500 meters into the thin air of the Sierra Nevada mountains, and even higher upto 3,398 meters if the weather permits. It really is an incredible climb. The Sierra Nevada is a UNESCO Biosphere reserve and a much loved national park of Spain.
Higher and higher the road climbs as Granada and the villages below appear to become smalller and smaller. At 2,400 metres is an altitude sports training complex regularly used by the pro teams and triathletes. At 2,500m is Alto de Hoya, a stage finish of last year's La Vuelta. The good news is that after the awesome ascent, now you can enjoy an awesome descent (play video!). We take a different way back via the village of Monachil. A descent that has countless switchbacks as it swoops down through the lush green of Monachil´s fertile valley and downwards even further to arrive back in Granada for the final time.
Today we offer airport (Malaga or Granada), bus or train station transfers on this last day. Sadly we say goodbye, unless that is you stay on and ride some more with us in Granada (we have self guided loop ride options) or join another one of our tours.
