Prepare for a classic day of road cycling with an exhilarating loop ride with 2 mountain passes and views to the Mediterranean sea! Pass through an ancient gap in the coastal mountains to Periana before attempting the famed Puerto del Sol, a hairpin classic with panoramas that fill a trip. Finish the afternoon with a soak in the thermal baths of Alhama. (NB spa treatments not included). |

Loja Mountains

Enjoy the many ascents and descents on the way to the city of Loja and its Sierra. The road from Alhama winds its way down to the fertile valley below of asparagus before a good climb up for vistas of the many craggy peaks around. For a snack, try Loja's famous sugared donuts with a strong coffee. |

Escape to Montefrio

This loop to Montefrio is also a visual feast with a good ride through small villages. Climb a shady route, used in the Vuelta a Espana 2010, before slipping down into pretty Montefrio, its church and castle standing precariously on a rocky outcrop. Prepare for a gentle but long climb back upto your base in Alhama. |

Onwards to Granada

If short of time, this is the end of your training in the Granada region and you can take transportation back to Malaga or Granada.
or continue with a ride to Granada. A climb to start off before spinning past a lake lined with pine trees and across a dam. These are the roads used frequently in the Vuelta a Andalucia pro-race where the likes of Armstrong and Sastre have raced. In the saddle, you fly through picturesque countryside, to crest a plateau from where the last Moorish king turned and saw the Alhambra Palace for the final time before Granada fell. Take in the majestic view yourself before heading into this tremendous picture. Have time to visit the sights of Granada and the Alhambra (optional extra).

Sierra Nevada challenge

Heading into the Sierra Nevada, ride to the top of the highest paved road in Europe at 3398 meters (weather permitting). Here the mountain peaks of Pico Veleta are your companions and the landscape around grandiose. This is the road of cycling legends where the pros race and train. Just imagine the descent back down to Granada. |

- Bring your own bike or hire of good quality ORBEA racing road bike (carbon-alu frame, Shimano ultegra-105 groupset, compact or triple chainset) with seat post bag for puncture kit and spare tube - 95 Euros for 5 days or 115 for 6 or 7 days.

Good surfaced roads on quiet country roads (busier near Granada). Suitable for road bikes. The countryside is rolling and the terrain is hilly. Be prepared for hills and climbs and of course some great descents. |
