Ride and Watch La Vuelta a España 2012
Fully Guided & Supported • 4 star City Hotels & Country Inns
Challenging • 10 Days • 1st to 10th September 2012
We are proud, once again, to offer the chance to watch one of the world´s greatest road races, La Vuelta a España 2012. This tour has been designed for the more experienced rider, with an opportunity to witness cycling history as we prepare ourselves to watch 6 race stages, including 3 high mountain days and ride some of the famous climbs. With fewer crowds compared to the Tour de France, you are sure to view the star riders up close and experience the incredible atmosphere of a pro-race.
Focusing on the all important last week and a half of racing, we will follow the route from Northern Spain through Asturias and Cantabria, and spend time watching the race and riding in the mighty Picos de Europa, regarded as many as the most picturesque mountain range in Europe. With a stop over in medieval Segovia and then onto the finale in Madrid, this promises to be our strongest Vuelta tour yet!
Watch this short video taken by us from our viewing point on the tortuous Angliru climb from the 2011 Vuelta - this was the decisive attack from Juan José Cobo to win La Vuelta that left Bradley Wiggins trailing...sample the atmosphere as the leaders ascend the mountain!
You can be guaranteed we will offer you the best viewing spots on the climbs and riding in our home country. In previous editions we have stayed in the same hotels as many of the teams and been fortunate enough to meet some of the riders.
With a great team, including the ex masters sub champion of Andalucia and Vuelta a Espana Masters rider to lead the way, we will give you a chance to ride some of this year´s race route and challenge yourself on the classic mountains.
From a pick up in Oviedo and drop off in Madrid, we will focus on the crucial stages of this year's Vuelta. Cobo, last year's champion, decscribed the route has having "lots of explosive stages and steep finishes," and must be favoured by the climbers. "The stages are short, but there aren't any dull moments," five-times Le Tour winner Miguel Indurain commented. "It would have been very tough for a time trialist like me to win this one - too many summit finishes!"
Our days will include a ride in the morning, usually along the race route, a break for lunch and then we ride up the big climb of the day to our viewing point, enjoying the building atmosphere. With charming hotels, great food and some fantastic cycling all included, this a trip designed for the cycling enthusiast. Come and join us to see who will be wearing the leader´s red jersey on the podium in Madrid!

DAY BY DAY
1
Gijon
(transfer from Oviedo) Saturday 1st September 2012
We greet each other in the northern seaside city of Gijón in Asturias and present the team and the route at an informal welcome meeting at our hotel (we will be offering a transfer today from Oviedo airport to Gijón, if required). The 4 star hotel we have chosen for the next two nights has all the mod-cons expected and is in a great location to explore the town.
Have time in the afternoon to venture into the historic centre of this maritime port or relax beachside. We regroup in the evening for a welcome dinner, trying some of the specialities of the region, and look forward to the week ahead.
2
Gijón
(High Mountain - Race Stage)
80km
We start the day with a ride over to the race route to sample our first taste of the atmosphere of the La Vuelta. Climb the short category 1 "El Fito" to reach a 360 degree viewpoint of stunning vistas. Descend down the smooth tarmac along the green Asturian valleys, stopping for lunch in a quaint village. The afternoon is all about the epic ascent to the Lagos de Covadonga, a hors category thriller where the race today ends in the high lakes of the Picos de Europa. Many a past Vuelta has been decided here. We will await the race leaders and watch the end of this magnificent stage. We then literally fly back down the descent and take a van transfer back to Gijón.
3
Laviana
(High Mountain - Race Stage)
90km
After a hearty buffet breakfast, we take a transfer out before riding a favourite area of previous years. We join the race route and ride along small villages to the foot of the Pajares climb. Today is one of the key days in the trip and has to be regarded as the "Queen" stage of this year´s tour. The pros will ride 185km over 2 category 1 climbs (we won´t ride this part!) before ascending the final Hors Category Pajares climb to 1,850 metres, with a new 3km ending (Cuitu Negru) at the ski-station that has just been tarmaced to make this the toughest climb of the race! We will spend the afternoon on the climb watching the action unfold. As with all high mountain finishes, expect all the locals to be out in force cheering on the climbers. This will be an amazing day.
In the evening we will take a transfer back to our beautiful rural hotel in Laviana and enjoy a group meal together in its well regarded restaurant. We will uncork a few bottles of the famous Asturiano cider and celebrate our mountain adventure.
4
Vilaviciosa
50km or
100km
Today is a rest day for La Vuelta and a much more relaxed day for us. After a later start, we will ride a route from our hotel over quiet roads enjoying the scenery of the countryside. We will arrive for a late lunch at our destination, the interesting and historic town of Vilaviciosa, and stay in a restored 17th century hotel.
After lunch, take time out to relax and experience this picturesque town, or for those who wish for some more kms (!), we can ride a short loop through rustic villages. Tonight you are free to discover the variety of tapas bars and local treats.
5
Potes - Picos de Europa
(Race Stage)
85km
The race heads back into the stunning Picos today and we will be there to see it. A morning ride takes us past flowing rivers as we pedal onto the mountain village of Potes, our base for the next 2 evenings. From here we will climb the col of Fuente Dé (a gentler ascent) to see the finish of today´s stage 17. From this picturesque high we will head back down to our mountain retreat hotel and enjoy a group dinner together.
6
Potes - Picos de Europa
Rest Day or
upto 85km
A rest day to explore this pleasant market town or indeed talk a hike in the Picos. Potes is one of the most attractive villages in Cantabria and is surrounded by spectacular mountains and running streams.
For those who would like to ride the bike, we will take a morning spin through the verdant valleys
and the local stone housed villages.
A free day to dine, try regional favourites such as the well regarded "cocido lebaniego" or chickpea casserole.
7
Segovia
(Race Stage)
80km
After breakfast, we ride out of the Picos, exploring this scenic area further. We take a transfer into the province of Castille and León to meet the end of today´s stage. Being a flat stage, the end will certainly be contested by the sprinters aiming for the green jersey. An exciting finish.
The race finish is very near to our superb 4 star hotel for the next 2 nights, right in the heart of pretty Segovia and with incredible views of the world renowned Aqueduct - the best preserved of its kind anywhere in the world. Segovia is often described as Spain at its best with medieval streets, the highest number of Romanesque churches in all of Europe and a castle that was the inspiration for Walt Disney. You are free to explore this town tonight and no doubt enjoy the roasted suckling pig that every restaurant is proud of.
8
Segovia
(High Mountain - Race Stage)
90km
The organisers of this year´s Vuelta have tried to leave the best until last, with the penultimate race day finshing on the fantastic Bola del Mundo. This is where Nibali duelled with Mosquera to win the Vuelta 2010. The climb reaches over 2,250 metres, but the stage for the pros is ridiculously hard with three 1st Cats and a 2nd Cat climb before even reaching the Bola (we will focus on riding the Bola only!). The climb will be packed with local fans, and is not to be missed.
We head back to our hotel in Segovia and enjoy a group celebratory dinner together. The winner of this year´s Vuelta will be known.
9
Madrid
(Race Stage)
After breakfast, we take the short drive to the capital Madrid and check-in to our final 4 star city hotel. In the heart of Madrid, our location is ideal to walk across to the final finishing straight where the colourful peloton will stream past 10 times as it laps the city. Be there to see the winner on the podium and enjoy this special fiesta atmosphere.
10
Madrid transfer Monday 10th September 2012
Time for breakfast and a stroll around the capital before we make our final transfers to the airport. We bid adios to each other with fond memories of our very own Vuelta a España.
