White Villages Of Andalusia
Here is a tour with a big landscape and every avid reader, road cyclist and historian will love it. The mountains of the Sierra Nevada rise, as you arrive at the jewel in the Moorish crown, Granada. Whiling away time in the Teateries of the Arab quarter or just strolling around the romantic gardens of the Alhambra Palace, it´s a fitting way to start this tour of Andalusia. Moving onwards towards the Poniente Granadino, the “Last kingdom of the Moors”, and pedal through the mountains into the province of Malaga, into the lovely Axarquia region. Here, medieval knights fought great battles with the Moors bathed in the Coastal sun. Move onward to take in ancient Antequera with its Neolithic burial tombs and magnificent Alcázar fortress and then venture further into inland Spain. Discover its traditional white villages set against green backdrops, sample spanish Tapas treats and take in some tremendous scenery of the Famous El Chorro gorge walkway. Next on the path is pretty white washed town of Ronda, where Victorian poets, Romance writers, Brave bullfighters and Modern moviemakers met. Circling around its famous bullring, you finish this ride through the centuries. Hemmingway´s muse, Ronda has the perfect ending to a cycle-touring adventure.

Arrive in Granada and, if time permits, visit the Alhambra Palace, the most magnificent blend of Arabic ruler´s ingenuity and medieval Christian king´s architectural skill. It is where Katherine of Aragon, King Henry VIII´s wife spent her childhood and where American author, Washington Irving lived and wrote during his stay in Andalucia! Spend the afternoon wandering the souk, cathedral, museums and sun soaked plazas. Relax in your 4 star hotel for the night with views of the city and Sierra. Option: For those really keen to get this trip on the road, why not extend your trip here for a day and go up into the Sierra Nevada and have a go at the Pico Veleta, Europe´s highest road?Day 2. Granada to Alhama
Ride out of Granada to the Genil valley, where Washington Irving, Queen Isabella, Christopher Columbus and the Duke of Wellington once trod. Cycle winding hills, past a blue lake and small villages before arriving at one of the more romantic towns, Alhama which for centuries has lured travellers with its thermal waters, gorge and attractive Arab quarter. Option: It is a shame to leave this lovely place so quickly, why not stay awhile and soak in the medieval ambience and go for another ride? Ask us about Extra Days here in our Home town!
A day of unforgettable vistas awaits you as you climb out to the fertile plain of Zafarraya. Pass through a beautiful U-shaped mountain doorway, the only geographical break in the coastal range before setting your eyes upon the shimmering Mediterranean sea 900 metres below. Spend the night in a small white village with 360 views of the scenic landscape. It is a micro climate in this region and the lemon, almond and orange trees blossom first in the spring here.
Still in the Malaga province, travel through this mountain scenery, enjoying the varried terrain of rocky outcrops and hilltop villages. Take an optional (challenging) mountain ride up to El Torcal, a strange and beautiful wind-sculptured limestone national park. The day ends in the Baroque town of Antequera with her Roman ruins, churches, Arab castle and home to some of Europe´s oldest prehistoric burial grounds. Option: Have the opportunity to upgrade your hotel to a luxurious 5 star 16th century convent (2 night minimum) - please enquire. Option: Why not take an extra day to rest and explore the sights and history of Antequera?
Leaving Antequera, spend the day cycling country roads abundant with the fragrant smells of roadside Rosemary and oranges. Visit one of Spain´s most interesting geographical features, the El Chorro Gorge, an awesome gaping chasm in the mountain. This is also the place of the newly opened "Caminito del Rey" (The King's Walkway) - stop and walk along the high wooden walkway hanging above the canyon for the most incredible views.
Pass by the shimmering Guadalhorce reservoirs before arriving in the traditional village of Ardales. Stay in the historic centre in beautiful lodgings with comfortable amenities, including a roof top plunge pool. Option: For an extra day of cycling, you can take a loop of 50km through the national park to Casarabonela, including the fantastic climb and descent of the Puerto de las Abejas. As well you may wish to also book tickets for the Camino del Rey, a staggering vertigo inducing walk around the great rock face of the El Chorro gorge.
Experience bandit territory by riding through the Sierra de las Nieves national park, home to white washed villages and dramatic moutain scenery. Arrive in Ronda, a place Orson Welles loved so much his ashes were spread near here. Snap photos from the staggering viewpoints and the famous Puente Nuevo bridge, immortalized in Hemmingway´s "For whom the Bell Tolls", before taking a welcome rest in your centrally located hotel. There is a fascinating mix of history here with Moorish arches, Modern day memorabilia of Bullfighting & many more lovely squares, plazas and mirador viewpoints to fill the afternoon and evening. There are over 30 galleries, museums & churches to visit so it is a full day indeed!
Argentine writer, Jorege Luis Borges (1899-1986) said of the town, “It is here, in Ronda, in the delicate penumbra of blindness, a concave silence of patios, leisure of the jasmine and the light sound of water, which summoned up memories of deserts.” After breakfast, spend the morning visiting romantic Ronda. strolling her winding alleyways, Spain´s first bullring and her landmark bridge straddling the gorge the town perches upon. If you walk down below into the gorge there are some stupendous views upwards of the town as well! You will find time flies and it will be, before you know it, time to say adios and make your onward connections via train or bus with memories of those sunlit white washed plazas of Andalusia.

The small hamlets bursting with geranium colours, the peep into village life, the awakening of towns in the mornings, this route gives you a glimpse of southern Spain at its finest.
The tour commences in the bustle of Granada in our 4 Star start, why not begin with a spa bath there in Moorish tradition? You continue on to drink deeply, the sleep that comes with higher altitude in the tranquility of mountain air of Alhama and its array of rustic and real historical 17th century Hospedería, La Seguiriya carved into the ancient rock. Enjoy this traditional setting with gorge views and then into the Axarquía region with its lemons and orange trees and stay at a family run 3 star hotel only a stone´s throw from the Puerto de Leon pass and Malaga.
In ancient Antequera, rest those weary bones in the centre of this historic city, where the dead sleep in the prehistory dolmens to lovely marble sarcophagus in the many chapels and churches. Next to an elegant Renaissance square and views of the Arab built Alcazar fortress slumber deeply in this former 18th century Manorial Home, before heading into the landscape of 19th century bandits. Or why not treat yourself and stay in a 16th century convent hidden in the olive groves out of town. A marvellous way to celebrate a special trip in style.
Encamp and enjoy Ardales and its most lovely lodgings with a roof top plunge pool. Then finally onwards to Ronda, muse of Hemmingway where your friendly 3 Star hotel could hardly be closer to the world famous gorge, the oldest bull ring in Spain and of course, Andalusian hospitality. There are options to upgrade further this tour´s accommodation in Historic monument hotels in Ronda, Antequera and Granada, so do ask!

“White Villages - 20 October 2017"
Hi Maggi, We arrived safe in Ronda after another good day. The hotel is great, the bikes are in the garage. Overall it’s been a terrific holiday. Everything has worked just as we hoped it would. Dean was excellent at setting us up. We had just the right amount of challenge on the trip. The villages and hotels were beautiful. The climb of El Torcal all the way to the top was a real highlight. Your guide book is so good! I took the Lonely Planet guide to andalusia and your book is MUCH better. You have historical detail and just the right amount of tips about where to go and what to see. I especially appreciated the notes about the Civil War as this is something I am very interested in. So thank you! The notes you provide for cycling directions were also excellent. Tomorrow we head off for Malaga and home. Thank you again for a terrific trip."

“White Villages - Gorgeous ride, great people! - May 2017"
We did a self-guided bike tour of the White Villages of Andalucia, and loved it. Maggi worked with us to modify the itinerary to our requests, since we wanted to start in Alhama, and have an extra day in Antequera. She was very responsive and great to work with. The bikes fit us well and we had no problems. Our luggage was always at the next hotel when we arrived. The routes were beautiful, and easy to follow. There were some big climbs, but we were warned! We highly recommend Cycling Country."

“Villages of Andalusia - November 2016"
AWe thoroughly enjoyed our 5 days cycling through Andalusia! The scenery was amazing, roads quiet, accommodation fantastic, and people friendly (despite our complete lack of ability to speak Spanish). The instructions for our self-guided tour were precise and easy to follow, and the route was perfectly manageable - even though we were carrying our own gear in panniers! We can't speak highly enough of Maggi and Geoff, who were responsive, helpful and friendly both before and during our trip. They really stepped up to rescue us when circumstances meant we couldn't cycle on one of our planned days. Would absolutely recommend this trip!

“White Villages! - September 2016"
All in all, I would say that it was a very enjoyable trip. Certainly we had lots of adventures—good exercise, beautiful scenery, great people—that’s what cycling is all about, eh?! Your company and your people lived up to the glowing reviews we read ahead of time. : ) Perhaps some day we will have another chance to tour with Cycling Country."

“White villages of Al-Andalus tours - December 2015"
My wife and I did the 7 day biking tour of the white villages through "Cycling Country" in December 2015. Everything was just perfect. We have already been to a few biking holidays and this was by far the best and most organized. From the very beginning Maggie was extremely helpful - answering all of our questions and requests. Upon arriving Dean met us and gave us a great and detailed explanation of the route, and also gave us tons of information and maps of the area. The extremely detailed explanations for each day ensured that we never got lost. All of the hotels booked for the tour were great- in particular the amazing suite in Alhama de Granada and the beautiful apartment in Ardales. The bikes themselves were also of very high quality. Besides the great service the route itself was just amazing- with breathtaking scenery, beautiful villages, great food and nice people. We highly recommend this tour and "Cycling Company". "

Hi Geoff and Maggie, Finally back to our daily routine and an opportunity to write this email to you guys. Spain was awesome and the 5 day cycling trip was the absolute highlight of our vacation. The directions, accommodations, Luggage transfers and restaurant recommendations were all excellent!
The views, villages and experiences along the route were memorable! AND SO WERE THE ELEVATIONS…..but we did it
And felt totally exhilarated by it all.
Thank you Maggie and Geoff for the adventure of a life time. It was great meeting you guys and we wish you continued success.
We will highly recommend your tour and look forward to traveling with you again one day."
B.Korodetz, Toronto, Canada - November 2015
2015 - "We had a great trip. The cycling was challenging but well worth the scenery, the views and the white villages we visited. The accommodations were wonderful and the hosts were very pleasant and helpful. The food was very tasty but then how can you go wrong with tapas, cerveza and sangria. Kathy and I would like to thank Cycling Country for setting up the tour, providing the bikes, maps, information sheets/booklet and directions. Definitely, an A-One job. It was a pleasure meeting Warren, Geoff and Maggie. Otherwise as we said, the trip was great and the organization and preparatory help from Cycling Country was superb. A great big thank you from us both."
G. & K. Osborne, Kingston, Canada - November 2015
2015 - "Thank you so much Maggi for helping us organise our cycling holiday. Your flexibility was really appreciated. Everything went perfectly and Michele and I had a wonderful tour. For anybody considering this tour be prepared for some hard rides but it is certainly worth it. The bikes were good, the navigation instructions were extremely clear (we did not get lost once) and the hotel accommodation was good value and very comfortable. I highly recommend Cycling Country."
S. Beaton, Tauranga, NZ - June, 2015
2015 - "Very well organised, from the routes chosen, the detailed instructions, the unique accomodations to the insider tips on dinning and sightseeing.. Loved everything (with the exceptions of some of the steep hills!). Will be going back!."

2014 - "On 25 October 2014, we finished the White Villages of Andalusia tour from Granda to Ronda thanks to superp planning, logistics, equipment and support of Maggi and Geoff. They took the time to advise and select a trip that was a good match of our experience and skill level. The weather was ideal and the cycling was very enjoyable and the scenery was outstanding! The climbs were not steep apart from getting to the top of Torcal which was optional...not really(!) We thoroughly enjoyed the trip and would highly recommend Cycling Country if you are looking to organise a cycling holiday.
A. Drom, Cumbria, UK - November 8, 2014
2014 - "Hi Maggi and Jeff - we really enjoyed our tour - definitely some climbs but the scenery was amazing and overall we had wonderful weather - slightly cool in the morning, warm but not too hot during the days, rainshowers in the late afternoons. Even the one day that had several rainstorms was beautiful - we saw a double rainbow that day. Thanks for the GPS routes - that really helped us get into and out of some of the towns. And we loved the information packets - its always fun to know more about the place you are in. Hope you are having fun in Portugal - it was great meeting you!"
M. Pratt, Portland, Oregon, USA - Sept 28, 2014
2013 - "I just wanted to thank you for a great cycling trip to the White Villages. The scenery was absolutely spectacular, and everyone was extremely friendly. And of course the cycling was super. .... I was very pleased and impressed by your organization and what you provided - well done!" .
G. Spence, Vancouver, Canada - November, 2013
2013 - "Just a final note to thank you so much for a great trip. The route you chose was perfect - no traffic and splendid scenery. The luggage transfer went without a hitch and you even transported me without complaint. All in all, I can't really think of how you could make it better. Many thanks - We will be spreading the word about how great a company you are.".
J. Hyndham, Canada - November 20, 2013
2013 - "Just back from a great self-guided trip of 5 days through the white villages...Maggie and Geoff of Cycling Country did a great job from start to finish, from initial booking through follow up. The bikes were great, the route notes and maps fine (never got lost!), and their preselected hotels were just great. The recommendations for restaurants and sights along the way are most helpful. Went in mid-June so the temps were high--would recommend earlier or later in the year--but an early start each day made the going bearable. This company is a great operation and we highly recommend them." .
R. Vargo, Connecticut, USA - June 20, 2013
Four of us celebrated significant birthdays (50) by cycling the White Villages of Al-Andalus. What a terrific trip through the real Spain, great quiet route, friendly and clean accomodation and terrific food. Geoff and Maggi were outstanding and ever helpful. Route directions great, no wrong turns, no waiting for bags, and all the pieces came together for us without a hitch. Can't wait until the next time. Muchas gracias a Cycling Country par una adventura tan buenissima.
Gerry Cleary, Ireland
