Blois to Tours
7 days – Self Guided
Quality Hotels & Country Retreats
The Loire tinted gold by the sky’s reflection, where the sun comes to dive, the light, the breeze, the calm, this restrained impetuosity is there, the sign of a big and beautiful river. It is not by chance that this region was called by our ancestors the “Garden of France”, so let yourself be guided through the parks and castles, in this flat, cool and green country. The valley, deceived by the undulations of the ground which blur the horizon, seems infinite.
From castle to castle, Blois, Amboise, Chambord, Cheverny, Chenonceaux, so many opportunities to enter the most beautiful residences of the majesty!
In the footsteps of François I, Joan of Arc or Leonardo da Vinci, this is much more than a bike trip, it’s a journey back in time. Stages that take you to the heart of the great cities of the valley, allow you to understand part of the history of France. A trip to the land of kings, queens and artists who made our history!

We had a wonderful time. Of course we drank too much of that wine, but we reckoned we deserved it! Thanks again for a memorable cycle down the Loire.
Day 1. Blois, Loire Loop
39km (70m ascent)
Start cycling with a pleasant countyside loop, along the longest river in France. Ride along its banks and enjoy the heritage of the Loire. Enjoy small villages such as Cour-sur-Loire and discover the extensive wildlife of the river, including the many birds that have made this majestic waterway home.
Back on Blois, lose yourself in its narrow streets. Discover its castle, churches, houses and gardens, all organized like an amphitheater cut into the rock. A bourgeois town, with a staircase of streets, at the top near the cathedral you will appreciate the panorama of the surrounding countryside and forests.
Day 2. Blois, Chambord Loop
48 km (160m ascent)
A bike loop to Chambord Castle and its forest park. You will leave Blois to ride on royal paths. They will lead you straight to the four towers of this impressive castle, built as a hunting lodge for Francois I. From the Renaissance to the Empire, let yourself be surprised by the historical richness of the place! A truly magical place. Return to Blois.
Day 3. Blois to Chaumont Sur Loire
44 km (180m ascent)
From Blois see the Loire snake west into the heart of the valley – this is your direction. Today’s objective: Chaumont-sur-Loire and its castle which hosts the International Garden Festival every year. But before that, you will cross the countryside and the Russy forest estate. You will pass near the castle of Beauregard, former hunting lodge of François I. The castles of Beau Séjour, Chailles or Villelouet will grab your attention before your arrival in Chaumont.
Day 4. Chaumont sur Loire to Amboise
22 km (85m ascent)
A day to wonder along the Loire by bike. You will arrive in Amboise, city of Leonardo da Vinci. Visit his last home and now a museum, the chateau Clos Lucé is a fascinating place to explore the mind of an inventor and artistic genius. A trip to the royal castle makes this a market town of character where it is both pleasant to stroll through its alleys or alongside the river banks.
Day 5. Amboise, Chenonceaux loop
39 km (230m ascent)
You leave the Loire riverbanks and head toward the south. Welcome to Touraine! Luxuriant, abundant and spiritual this is the land of Rabelais and Balzac Courier. In this Eden of fine food, let yourself be tempted by local dishes and spirits. In Chenonceaux, take time to enjoy its famous chateau. Built in 1513, it is one of the most famous and beautiful of the Loire Valley, stretching across the river itself. You ride back to Amboise for a second night.
Day 6. Amboise to Tours
45km (230m ascent)
You leave Amboise, cycling past beautiful manor houses, listening to river birdsong. Take the opportunity to taste a few Touraine wines, or simply learn more about the wine making process at a local winery. This day leads you to the old city of Tours, capital of the Loire castles. Take time to discover the fifteenth century wooden houses still present here and the interesting back streets.
Day 7. Tours, Villandry loop
43km (15m ascent)
On the banks of the Cher you go west and discover the exhilarating colours and the beauty of the gardens of famous Villandry Castle. A dip in the heart of the sixteenth century, this place will leave you amazed. A leisurely route, you return to Tours.
